The entire nation is addressing the issues of aging in our communities not only as a way to serve older adults who live in our communities now, but as a way to prepare for the wave of Baby Boomers who are quickly approaching retirement age. The demand for housing alternatives, transportation assistance, and medical and other support services will increase as American society ages. In conjunction with the 2005 White House Conference on Aging, “The Booming Dynamics of Aging: From Awareness to Action”, several states, including North Carolina, have issued a Livable and Senior Friendly Communities Initiative.

The Henderson County Council on Aging was awarded a grant from the University of North Carolina in 2005 to conduct a Senior Friendly Communities Survey in Henderson County, one of the first such surveys in the state. The ability of our community to respond effectively to increased needs will be influenced by how well we listen to the concerns and needs of older residents who often have a distinctive perspective on the experience of successful aging. By listening to older members in the community, and the agencies that serve them, the Senior Friendly Communities Survey sought to determine the most important aspects of helping seniors age in place and remain independent. Boomers were also asked to identify the issues they feel will directly affect the quality of their older years. The survey concentrated on four issues which contribute to healthy aging; Mobility, Living Environments, Wellness, and Community Engagement. Data from the survey was compiled into A Report on Healthy Aging in Henderson County which is available as a tool for area communities.

The LSFC project is in its second year with a focus on assessing existing resources for older adults in the community in an effort to promote proactive planning. Through the work and vision of the Healthy Aging Council, a steering committee of area agencies which serve older adults, issues are identified which need planning and attention to make Henderson County more responsive to the needs of seniors.

The concept of Livable and Senior Friendly Communities in truth addresses more than just the needs of older adults. The qualities which make a community livable meet the needs of individuals regardless of age. Safe sidewalks and neighborhoods are important for children as well as seniors. Affordable homes and preventative healthcare benefit everyone. Encouraging intergenerational connections helps both children and elders to feel valued. It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child, but we submit that is also takes a village to care for our elders. It is essential that effective partnering occur among all who are concerned about the well-being of older adults and their communities. Communities which recognize the value of their elders work to ensure that every effort is made to support healthy aging.
